Hello fellow animal lovers, I’m sorry you need this content.

Losing your four legged family is so difficult, I’m genuinely sorry for your loss whether it just happened, or is approaching. About a million of us go through this each year, that doesn’t make it easier, but know that you are not alone. If you need to learn the basics of pet cremation, I recommend you read the post titled The Basics of Cremation.

If you are seeking pet cremation costs in the Salt Lake City area, you have access to traditional flame based cremation, the more modern aquamation, and even a pet cemetery. Your lucky, most cities don't have all three.

The Salt Lake City area is a sprawling area stretched over 90 miles of the interstate from Provo in the south to Ogden in the north. This area has a moderately higher than average cost of living, and is moderately pet friendly. There are multiple dog parks, a few restaurants where your dog is welcome, but like many areas in the West, can have extreme cold or heat in different seasons.

My goal is to provide you with empowering consumer information, not to advertise for anyone, or malign their business, so no names will be used, but it isn't difficult to figure out an individual business if you wish to. I'll be reviewing 5 of the communities offerings today.

Location 1, Central - This business offers classic flame based cremation. Private cremations include an urn. Communal cremations do not return ashes, they are scattered in a wild area. They offer local pick up for 100.

Communal Cat 80 Medium dog 90 Large dog 100

Location 2, North- This business offers classic flame based cremation in private, or communal varieties. These prices do not include an urn, that costs from 20-130 extra. Local pick up is 150, after hours pickup is 200.

Communal Cat 45 Medium dog 60 Large dog 95

Location 3, South- This business offers traditional cremation, either private, individual, or communal. The price for private includes an urn. For communal, nothing is returned. Pick up is 100, in their local area.

Individual Cat 190 Medium dog 235 Large dog 235

Communal Cat 75 Medium dog 125 Large dog 125

Location 4, Central- This business offers aquamation, a water based process. They do offer private or communal aquamation. For private, a cremains are returned in an eco-friendly bag, for communal nothing is returned. This is the first, and only aquamation in the area.

Communal Cat 75 Medium dog 110 Large dog 150

Location 5, Central- This is a pet cemetery, not every community has one, but with a population of 1.2 million in the area, and ample land, it makes sense here. A funeral for your pet is going to cost near 3000, which is an inclusive price, but doesn't cover a stone. They don't do regular head or foot stones, they have sections where stones are mixed in with flowers, or are on a memorial wall. This isn't typical but I'm sure makes mowing a lot easier. A stone in one of these special sections is about 550-900 more. No service is included in the price, but they will set up a few chairs for you.

Location 6, North of Salt Lake City- This is another cemetery, a public one, where it is rumored they allow pet burials for 100. That's not a typo, you have to have a proper "casket" which is a few hundred dollars. Otherwise, this is an outstanding value in pet burial.

Summary

The Salt Lake City area is large, has a moderately elevated cost of living, and is a large area.

-Overall, local pet pick up is expensive, at least 100 from your home, and nobody is claiming to service the entire area. This makes sense, it's a 90 mile stretch of highway, it could be 3-4 hours round trip.

-A private cremation/aquamation for a cat will likely cost about $150 - 240

-A private cremation/aquamation for a medium size dog will likely cost $200 - 285

-A private cremation/aquamation for a large dog will likely cost $255 - 300

-Communal cremation/aquamation runs $45 - 150 depending on size

-Burying your pet in a pet cemetery will cost about $3000

Sometimes people are in a rush to make cremation or funeral decisions. Slow down. Consider your options carefully, once you make these choices, there is no going back. Your four legged family will be fine lying in state at home for a day or two if that’s what it takes to do this right. You can check out this page for an eBook on how to have a pet funeral at home.
